Kate Stevenson

Kate Stevenson is the chair of the Mathematics Department at California State University, Northridge (CSUN) where she has been a professor since 2001. She earned her B.S. from Mount Holyoke College with a major in mathematics and a minor in economics and her Ph.D. is in mathematics from the University of Pennsylvania.  She enjoys working with CSUN’s diverse student body while continuing her research in algebraic geometry and mathematics education.

Kate was chair of the American Mathematical Society’s Committee on Education from 2018-2021. In the past, she served Director of the Developmental Math Program at CSUN (2009-2018), and she is known for her curricular innovations at the CSU. Kate also leads a 10-year collaboration with Los Angeles Unified School District to develop and support a math course that serves over 3500 seniors each year to help them transition into college mathematics and statistics . In 2016, Kate co-chaired the California State University’s Quantitative Reasoning Task Force, which developed recommendations  for quantitative reasoning in California’s public education system that continue to influence educational policy. In 2008, she won the University Distinguished Teaching Award and the CSM Teaching Award in 2008, and in 2015 the CSM Service Award.
