Regina Figueroa Class of 2008

(she/her)

As a native New Englander, I grew up in the culturally rich town of Northampton, MA. The surrounding five colleges enriched the small community I lived in and filled me with aspirations that were beyond my family's means. I graduated from a Smith Vocational high school. My intention was to work and pay my way through college.

Beginnings: I worked at a local hair salon and paid my way through community college. During this time two impactful things occurred. First, I discovered my passion for community engagement and non-profit organizations. My service to the communities in which I lived has continued throughout my life. Second, I was encouraged to apply to Mount Holyoke College. I received a Frances Perkins scholarship and attended school full time while owning and operating my own business. While attending MHC I majored in art history and minored in studio arts. I graduated Cum Laude in 2008.

In 2013 I married my partner Lisa Hahn and we moved to Riverside California where I completed my M.Ed at the University of California Riverside. While attending UCR I volunteered at school and in the local arts community. I was the chair of my cohort and the co-chair of the GSOE. At the Riverside Art Museum I jointly archived the museum's collections, and at Division 9 Gallery I wrote a proposal that secured funding to support four cultural festivals that engaged the community in the arts.

As an educator I have taught both second and fourth grade in a title one school. The Corona Virus and distance learning has resulted in learning loss and a set back for most of my students. In response, I was recruited to become a reading specialist. I attended the University of Southern California and became certified as a Reading Specialist.

Today: I am a part of the Instructional Leadership Team at Dunn Elementary School in Rialto California. Our team analyzes school wide data and makes recommendations that combat further learning loss and promotes high levels of growth. As a reading specialist I analyze data and provide evidence based systematic intervention to small groups of students. I continue to volunteer at my school site to help create opportunities for student enrichment and social emotional well being.

I am excited to be a part of the Mount Holyoke College Club of Southern California and welcome the opportunity to create and host gatherings. In addition to being engaged in the local arts community, I enjoy doing yoga, golfing and hiking
